Pelvic floor weakness and pregnancy: causes, consequences and treatment

A well-trained pelvic floor is extremely important both before and after childbirth. Pregnancy and childbirth place significant strain on the female pelvic floor and can lead to permanent weakness if countermeasures are not taken in time.

How Pregnancy Strains the Pelvic Floor

During pregnancy, the pelvic floor is strained in several ways:

  • Hormonal changes: Hormones cause the tissue to become softer and more elastic—an important preparation for childbirth, but one that weakens the pelvic floor.
  • Weight of the baby: The baby’s increasing weight puts pressure on the pelvic floor.
  • Childbirth: The stretching that occurs during childbirth can place additional strain on the pelvic floor.

Other causes of pelvic floor weakness

Pregnancy isn’t the only thing that can weaken the pelvic floor. Other common causes include:

  • Lack of exercise and a predominantly sedentary lifestyle
  • Obesity, which places constant strain on the pelvic floor
  • Genetic predisposition to connective tissue weakness

Possible consequences

Untreated pelvic floor weakness can lead to various symptoms:

Stress incontinence

Involuntary urine leakage when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or lifting heavy objects. Even minor physical exertion can lead to uncontrolled urine leakage.

Bladder prolapse

If the pelvic floor no longer provides sufficient support for the bladder, it can descend downward. This often leads to a feeling of pressure in the lower abdomen and difficulty emptying the bladder.

Loss of sexual sensation

Pelvic floor weakness can also impair sexual pleasure, as the muscles in the pelvic area can no longer build up sufficient tension.

Treatment Options

At the UROMED Competence Center for Urology, we offer effective treatment options for pelvic floor weakness:

  • Physical therapy for pelvic floor training: Targeted exercises under expert guidance strengthen the pelvic floor muscles long-term.
  • Biofeedback therapy: You learn to consciously perceive your pelvic floor and contract it in a targeted manner.
  • Personalized consultation: We work with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual situation.

Whether before childbirth, after delivery, or due to pelvic floor weakness from other causes—early treatment can effectively prevent subsequent complications.
