Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a modern, non-invasive treatment option that is successfully used at the UROMED Competence Center in Vienna to treat erectile dysfunction and other urological conditions.
Diagnosis of Erectile Dysfunction
Before treatment begins, a thorough diagnostic evaluation is essential. This includes:
- Basic diagnostics: Detailed medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests
- Testosterone testing: Hormonal causes are identified through a blood test
Only after a comprehensive evaluation will the appropriate treatment be determined in consultation with you.
What are Spark Waves?
Shock waves have been used successfully in medicine for over 30 years to break up kidney stones (lithotripsy) and for more than 20 years in orthopedics. This technology has proven to be safe, effective, and associated with few side effects.
In urology, so-called Spark Waves are used—a special form of low-energy shock waves that target the tissue specifically.
How do shock waves work?
Shock wave therapy relies on the body’s natural healing processes:
- New blood vessels: The treatment stimulates the formation of new blood vessels (neoangiogenesis).
- Improved blood flow: The new vessels lead to a lasting improvement in blood flow within the erectile tissue.
- Growth factors: The shock waves activate the body’s own growth factors and stem cells, which contribute to tissue regeneration.
The result is a long-term improvement in erectile function as well as effective pain relief, without medication and without surgery.
Areas of Application
Shockwave therapy is used at the UROMED Competence Center for the following conditions:
- Erectile dysfunction (ED): Improvement of erectile function through increased blood flow
- Chronic prostatitis / CPPS: Relief of chronic pelvic pain
- Penile curvature (IPP / Induratio penis plastica): Reduction of plaques and curvature
